How do you get the perfect work/life balance?
Returning to work after a career break can be a daunting prospect. Especially if it was for a life changing event such as having a baby. The change in dynamics at home can have such an impact on our identities, which follows through to our approach to work.
The change in routine can take a bit of getting used to, but thankfully businesses are becoming much more supportive of a more flexible way of working. Condensed hours, working from home, flexi and part time are now accepted ways of working. They can help your employer by maintaining an experienced and focused work force, but also help employees achieve the best work/life balance for them.
As an employee, it is the perfect way to continue in your chosen career, yet still manage to adapt to your change in circumstances. This links to the more recent awareness on wellbeing, mental health and alternative perks of a jobs (as opposed to just income potential). Ultimately, finding a career that fits with your family life enables you to achieve a more positive and productive approach at work.
It is worth noting that although working from home / flexi hours can provide a great alternative to the standard 9-5 approach, the ability to be in constant contact with the office can have its down sides. With the work/life boundaries changing to a more relaxed approach, there will always be the temptation to check emails on your phone or quickly log onto the work laptop when really you should be ‘out of the office’. However, I feel that over time you can work out a routine that works best for you.
The benefits of taking time to really switch off from work will allow you the time to recharge, refocus and prepare. That point is key to ensuring a good work life balance. Allowing time to relax when you are out the office will really enable you to commit fully when you are at work.
Over recent years I’ve changed my work hours’ various times in order to fit around my change in circumstances. I think as with any change a good support network is essential, and flexibility in your approach to your new routine. This will help you to continue to build and grow your career alongside, not at the expense of, your family life.
