The Great Resignation or the Great Opportunity?
This time last year, I was speaking to some clients regarding candidate's salary expectations, and some candidates were asking for a 10% rise in order to move to a new position, and a step up in responsibility. Clients were becoming aggravated with this, and putting those candidates aside.
More recently, I have spoken with some candidates who have achieved a 25% pay rise by challenging the market rate, and moving to another employer, or receiving counter-offers from their current employer.
Now, I can't guarantee that ALL candidates will receive a 25% pay-rise, however, I think this really reflects the nature of the civil engineering market. The talent pool is getting smaller, due to a range of factors (the pandemic, career changes, increasing workload demands, brexit), and there are more civil engineering projects ongoing in the UK now, than ever before.
The pressures of working are increasing, the costs of living are increasing, and the squeeze is felt by all.
There is no "good time" to move, but there is a reason that this age is called the "great resignation". I see it in a different light though - I see it as the "great opportunity" for candidates, as employers are now forced to consider candidates who aren't a "perfect match", and who need training, development, upskilling, and mentorship in certain areas. More often now, more junior candidates are being considered for positions, with more training provided for the likes of Civils 3D and other design software.
